Frequently asked questions

Straight answers on inspection frequencies, codes and Connecticut compliance.

How often must fire sprinklers be inspected?

Under local and national codes, sprinkler systems require quarterly inspections of control valves, gauges and alarm devices, plus an annual inspection with a main-drain and (where applicable) flow test. Your AHJ or insurer may require more.

How often do fire alarm systems need testing?

Local and national codes require semi-annual inspection of the panel and annual functional testing of every detection and notification device. Smoke-detector sensitivity is tested within the first year, then every two to five years.

How often should fire extinguishers be serviced?

Local and national codes require a monthly visual check (by your staff), an annual professional inspection, an internal examination at 6 years, and hydrostatic testing at 12 years.

What is an AHJ?

The Authority Having Jurisdiction is the entity — usually the local fire marshal — that enforces the fire code and accepts inspection documentation. In Connecticut, the State Fire Safety Code (based on national model codes) is enforced by local fire marshals.
